Rundle Mall in Adelaide looks much like any other street mall in Australia. We were just walking along browsing until we bumped into these delightful looking pigs which made us laugh. They were just so funny. I especially love the one at the bin.
As I found out later, these sculptures are known as ‘A Day Out’. They are the work of Marguerite Derricourt who says she was partly inspired by the bronze boar (Il Porcellino) in Florence. Having won Adelaide’s Rundle Mall National Sculpture Competition, they were unveiled on 3 July 1999.
They became so popular that a second competition was run to name the pigs. So, today they are officially known as Truffles (the standing pig), Horatio (the sitting pig), Augusta (the trotting pig) and of course my favourite pig at the bin – Oliver
